Coldplay is a band which is both enigmatic and iconic. The band is often criticized as being over-influential, especially by U2, and as a musical set that is not daring enough yet with over 100 million records sold and countless No 1 hits, they are not a conventional rock band but are certainly not a fly-by-night pop sensation. If we start with just a few statistics, the importance of Coldplay (known at the start as Pectoralz) to the history of music in the past two decades is unquestionable.
Coldplay have released nine albums since their debut album Parachutes came out in 2000. They have headlined Glastonbury, perhaps the most influential rock music festival in the world, no fewer than three times. Their second album A Rush of Blood to the Head sold 15 million copies whilst their single Paradise sold 900,000 copies.
The band are now celebrating twenty-five years together and counting. Like other famous groups such as U2 and REM they have remained with the same personnel unchanged throughout this period, namely Chris Martin – lead vocals, rhythm guitar, piano and keyboards Jonny Buckland – lead guitar, backing vocals, piano, keyboards and harmonica Guy Berryman – bass guitar, backing vocals, piano, keyboards, harmonica, percussion, guitar and Will Champion – drums, percussion, drum machine, backing vocals, piano, keyboards and guitar.
Chris and Jonny met during their orientation week at University College, London, in September 1996 and have spent their first year working on forming a band. Guy was a fellow classmate who subsequently joined them to be followed by Will on percussion.
To avoid the bickering and aggravation common to so many big-time musicians when touring or recording together, Coldplay have adopted a code of conduct to which all members have signed up to the band functions as a democracy and anyone using hard drugs faces dismissal.
Each of Coldplay’s nine albums, all of which have been followed up by a tour, have marked a stage in their musical development. The tone of Parachutes, the band's first studio album, Parachutes, was described by one reviewer as melodic pop with "distorted guitar riffs and swishing percussion" but also being "exquisitely dark and artistically abrasive".
The big selling follow–up album, A Rush of Blood to the Head, showed influences of singers as varied as Kate Bush and George Harrison. It received plaudits for being “darker and more experimental” than its predecessor, having a better production quality and more memorable tracks.
Their next album Xandy was viewed by some as rather a let-down. The reviewer in Rolling Stone magazine slated it saying “Whereas Rush of Blood was a nervy bid for bigness, X&Y is something less exciting. It's the serious sound of Martin trying to sing songs that match his stature. It's the sound of a blown-up band trying not to deflate.”
Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2006–09), however, was a chart topper showing a much greater rock influence. Chris Martin described Mylo Xyloto’s lyrics as being "It's about love, addiction, OCD, escape and working for someone you don't like”. Ghost Stories was thought to be a “break-up” album, reflecting Chris Martin’s divorce from actress Gwynneth Paltrow whilst there is speculation that their latest A Head Full of Dreams may be their last.
The music that Coldplay have evolved over the years may not have pleased everyone but the numbers and the two decades at the top speak for themselves. And then there are the live shows. If you can catch a Coldplay gig, you won’t regret it.
