It was the proudest moment of Deprotivo Alaves, a moment that will live in the memory of the fans of the small Basque team forever, as well as with every player that was associated with it. After all, Alaves had absolutely no reason to reach the final of the 2000-01 UEFA Cup as it did, almost against all odds, beating some respectable clubs along the way. And then the team went out and lost the match.
Alaves – full name Deportive Alaves, S.A.D – was established in 1921 in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz and has played decades in the shadow of bigger, more successful sisters Basque teams Athletic Club Bilbao and Real Sociedad. The team has never won a domestic trophy other than 3rd division or 2nd division titles, on the way back to La Liga. Well, in 1945-46 it had won the Copa Real Federacion Española de Futbol, which is the Spanish version of cup tournament for clubs playing in the second division.
Then came the miracle walk of 2000-01. Alaves qualified for the competition having finished the previous season in 6th place in La Liga and didn’t have to participate in the qualifying round. And then the team started moving up the rounds, scoring goals in an astonishing rate. During the first round, it beat Turkish side Gaziantepspor 4-3. It beat Norwegian side Lillestrom SK 5-3 in the second round and fellow Norwegian Rosenborg BK 4-2 in the third. In the fourth round, Alaves drew a heavy weight in Italy’s Inter, but the Italians proved to be no match either, after a 5-3 aggravated score. The quarter finals held a first meet with a Spanish team, this time it was Rayo Vallecano, and Alaves was again able to score four goals while Vallecano only score twice. Up the semi finals. Nobody expected it, probably not even the good people of Alaves, but no less than 9 goals were scored by the all-blue in an overwhelming 9-2 win over a German opponent FC Kaiserslautern. Liverpool, fresh from a win over Barcelona in the semis, was waiting.
The final was held in Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion in front of 48,000 fans and nobody expected the drama that was about to enfold. Liverpool went up 3-1 and the match looked about to be over, but Alaves had other plans. The team stormed back and equaled the score at 3-3 on a two Javi Moreno goals in the span of 2 minutes early in the second half. Robbie Fowler gave Liverpool the lead, but Jordi Cruyff equaled in the 88th minute. The match went into overtime, where in the 116th minute Delfí Geli scored an own goal to hand Liverpool the victory in the shape of a golden goal.
Two seasons later, Alaves was relegated to Segunda Division, from which it emerged in time for the 2016-17 season.
