대해서 데포르티보 라코루냐
There was a period in time, although a short period in time, when Deportivo La Coruna – the small team from Galicia, the team that nobody really paid much attention to, the team that was used to move up and down between La Liga’s Primera and Segunda Divisions – touched the sky. But meteoric climbs tend to come trembling down. And as rapid the climb up was, that rapid was the way down.
It started in the early 90’s. Depor was back to La Liga’s main stage in 1991 for the first time in almost 20 years. But this time, it was different. This time, the club started spending big money in the transfer market. In came Brazil’s 1994 World Cup winners Bebeto, Donato and Mauro Silva, followed in later years by another pair of Brazilians in Rivaldo and Djalminha, Bulgarian Emil Kostadinov and Spaniards Xikki Begiristain and Julio Salinas. Bebto wasted little time and in his first season, 1992-93, he finished as the league’s Pichichi (top scorer) with 29 goals. La Coruna was suddenly playing the game.
It all exploded during the 1993-94 season. With four games remaining, Deportivo was leading the league by three points over Luis Van Gaal and his stars stated Barcelona, winners of 3 titles in a row, and needed to win only two of the remaining four games. However, it was pressure time for a club not used to pressure and the team drew its next three games. There was still a chance to win the title, but in the final day of the season, Barcelona won and had to wait for the match to end in La Coruna. In the closing minutes, Deportivo’s defender Miroslav Dukic missed a penalty against Valencia and the match ended in a tie. It was celebration time again in Barcelona. Only years later it was revealed that Barcelona has paid large amount of money to Valencia players, to make sure they will put in the extra effort. The season after, Deportivo again finished as runner up.
Deportivo mourned and went back to work and Super Depor was born. In 1995 the team won the Copa del Rey – it’s first ever cup – after a win, how fitting, over Valencia. It later trashed Real Madrid 5-1 in the Spanish Super Copa. By 1998, Bebeto and Rivaldo were gone, but in came Javier Irureta, who coached arch-rival Celta Vigo. Irureta had to just slightly modify the side he inherited and brought in Diego Tristan from Mallorca and Dutch striker Roy Makaay from Tenerife, Victor Sánchez and Slavisa Jokanovic to strengthen the midfield. He set to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, where the defensive midfielder freed the attackers to roam the pitch. Makaay scored a hat-trick in the first match of the season and the winning goal in the last match against Espanyol to win the title. In all, he scored 22 goals for the season.
La Coruna became an elite club, again finishing as runner-up the year after and being a regular member of the Champions League for five straight years, reaching as high up as the semi-finals in 2004.
Then came the decline. The problem was, as was explained years later, that top players were not sold at the right time for the right money. In 2011-12, Depor was relegated for the first time in 20 years. The club was promoted back for the 2014-15 season and the Riazor is buzzing again.
Deportive La coruna, who play in blue and white, play its home matches in 33,660-seat Estadio Riazor. The club’s most capped player is Fran, who played in 550 matches (scoring 50 goals) between 1988-2005. It’s top goal scorer is Roy Makaay, who scored 96 goals in just 133 matches between 1999-2003.
