If you are into hard rock, with all that implies – the rawest possible vocals delivered in a really belligerent tone, strangely twisted sounding electric guitars plus bass guitars and drums, often including piano and keyboards. It is rock music without the shackles – loud, ruthless and uncompromising.
Guns’n’Roses have been described as the greatest hard rock band of all time with a history going right back to their formation in 1985. By 1986 they had been contracted to Geffen Records with a line up which included Axl Rose on vocals, Slash as lead guitarist, Duff McKagan on bass guitar and Steven Adler on drums. Today Rose, Slash and McKagan remain joined by Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese on keyboards, Richard Fortus on guitar and drummer Frank Ferrer.
Their 2017 Not In This Lifetime tour lasting several months and playing in more than twenty countries across the globe will give rock music fans a chance to see if this famous, if not notorious, group of hard boiled rock musicians have lost any of their energy and strength. They bring with them a legend of rock misbehavior that lives up to the best or the worst in that tradition.
Nobody realized just how successful Guns’n’Roses were going to be. “Appetite” sold thirty million copies when their record company expected no more than 200,000. Profanity became matter of everyday occurrence after their very first record began with the most well know four letter word! The band reached a pop music audience which was far far wider than the average heavy metal outfit – because that is a comparatively minor “rock genre” which is never used to the kind of record sales that have always been associated with Guns’n’Roses.
The guys in the band started off in a bad way, health wise, and hardly improved. Even before they started recording, Slash was in rehab from a regime of drinking Jack Daniels followed by heroin and Axl Rose had been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder. Axl had been so short of cash before the band started that he had a spell as a medical specimen, smoking cigarettes so that researchers could estimate the damage!
Obviously everyone has their own views on what the greatest tracks are that the group have produced. “Welcome to the Jungle” was their breakthrough track, very much a taste of things to come. Coming from the same “Appetite for Destruction” album, “Sweet Child o’ Mine” is notable for the opening guitar riff from Slash and for Axl’s vocals. Combining ballad style with hard rock makes it a track to define its times. Finally let’s mention November Rain’ from the‘Use Your Illusion I’ album in 1991 which was a nine minute power ballad and one of their highest ever sellers.
