Football franchise the Philadelphia Eagles are based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league's National Football Conference (NFC) East division.
The Eagles have won three NFL championships and played in two Super Bowl games,in 1980 where they lost out 27–10 to the Oakland Raiders and in 2004 where the New England Patriots edged the game 24-21. This record sees the Eagles as the only NFC East team without a Super Bowl championship to their name. The club was established in 1933 as a replacement for the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets but were always regarded as a totally new team both by themselves and by the NFL. Inspired by the Blue Eagle insignia of the National Recovery Administration—the centerpiece of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal the new franchise was named the Philadelphia Eagles.
Interest is promoted through the Eagles’ intensive rivalry with other teams. The “feud” with the New York Giants is regarded as the most bitter in the history of the NFL. They also have a long standing rivalry with the Washington Redskins, as well as their bitter competition with the Dallas Cowboys, which has become more high-profile in the last three decades.
Among the high profile players who have represented the Eagles over their eighty plus years let’s start with Chuck Bednarik, or "Concrete Charlie," the toughest player of his era. He played both line-backer and center and was a big part of two dominant championship teams in 1949 and 1960 that were led by their defense.
Tommy McDonald was the most valuable offensive player on Philadelphia's greatest championship team. He was the league's best receiver that year and was also one of the toughest. He became known as the last player in NFL history to wear a helmet without a facemask.
Steve Van Buren made an impact on Eagles lore that is without question. He was the best back of his era by a long shot and helped guide the Eagles to two championships. He finished his NFL career—all with the Eagles—with a then-NFL record of 5,860 career rushing yards and 69 touchdowns.
Donovan McNabb is the face of the great Philadelphia teams that went to five NFC title games in the 2000s. As a player he was a model of consistency.
Thought by many to be the finest Eagles player of all is defensive player Reggie White. No other defensive player had a greater combination of power, speed and ability than White. He was also the emotional leader of some of the greatest Eagles defenses of all time.
