대해서 피츠버그 스틸러스
In the years since 1970, when the Pittsburgh Steelers joined the newly merged National Football League they have become one of the most successful franchises around – a complete contrast to the “old days” when they were the oldest team never to win a league championship – and this is a franchise that dates back to May 1933. The Club was originally known as the Pittsburgh Pirates, adopting the same name as the baseball team as was frequently the practice but to distinguish the two the media began calling them the Rooneymen after their founder Art Rooney, himself a distinguished amateur sportsmen. His family have retained the control of the franchise ever since.
The team name varied during the war years but stabilised as the Steelers in 1945, the name reflecting the predominant employment pattern in the area. The years that followed the war were not crowned with success as has been noted – but from 1970 onwards the Steelers have notched up an amazing record of victories. The Steelers can show more Super Bowl titles (6), and the privilege of hosting more conference championship games than any other NFL team. The Steelers share the record of eight AFC championships with the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos and the record of fifteen conference championship games played in with the San Francisco 49ers. In terms of The Super Bowl appearances they are tied on eight with the Patriots, Broncos, and Dallas Cowboys with their most recent championship appearance, Super Bowl XLV, on February 6, 2011.
Such success only emanates from great players and let’s mention a few. On the field, “Mean” Joe Greene was a force to be reckoned with. Though he faced constant double- and even triple-teams, he managed to tally 78.5 career sacks. The 10-time Pro Bowler was also one of the elite few to take home the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award twice.
Jack Lambert was widely considered one of the most terrifying players in the league. Tall, mean and missing his front teeth, Lambert wasn’t easily intimidated. And he refused to let anyone intimidate his teammates.
Terry Bradshaw proved himself a good man for the end of the game. His nine Super Bowl touchdown passes are an NFL record, and four of them came in the game’s final stanza. In fact, of the 103 points the Steelers scored in Bradshaw’s four Super Bowls, nearly half (49) of them came in the final quarter.
By improbably corralling a deflected pass and taking it the distance, Franco Harris helped the Steelers to their first playoff win and put an end to 40 years of futility. However, Harris meant much more to the Steelers than simply one great play. Harris ran for more than 12,000 yards in his career and topped the 1,000-yard plateau eight times, an NFL record at the time of his retirement.
