대해서 퀸즈 파크 레인저스
One would expect a football club that is located at and plays in the city of London for over one hundred years, and is owned by an incredibly wealthy businessmen, to be right up there, near the top of the list of those posh Premier League clubs, basking in the starlight, having it’s worth rising as fast as TV rights and playing in one of those enormous theatres of dreams stadiums, where every home match is a celebration for the local who’s who. And yet, Queens Park Rangers has managed to remain on the other side of the list. Just perfect for what English football used to be.
33 per cent of Queens Park Rangers (QPR) shares are owned by India native Lakshmi Mittal, who owns the world biggest steel making company. In 2013, Forbes magazine rated Mittal as the 5th richest owner of football clubs, with a net worth of 16.5 billion US dollars. In addition, 2011, 66 per cent of the club’s shares were bought by Air Asia owner Tony Fernandes. Both haven’t yet poured in the funds supporters were hoping for, mainly for renovation and enlargement of old Loftus Road Stadium, one of England’s top leagues smallest football stadiums.
So, if not aura and owners, we can take a look at former players. And QPR’s all-time list is full of exciting players, who have provided plenty of pleasure to fans over the years. Top of the list is of course Gerry Francis. The captain recorder 312 appearances for his home side on two spells (1968-1979, 1981-82) in which he scored 57 goals and came close to leading the team to the title in 1976. He also captained England’s national team in mid-70’s and, after retiring, he managed the club twice (1991-1994, 1998-2001).
Phil Parkes, the blonde mustached giant goalkeeper played for QPR 344 matches between 1970-1979. His ever presence in goal, especially in 1976, has pundits announcing that it was the finest club to have never won a championship.
Young striker Les Ferdinand made his QPR day view in the age of 20 in 1987. During the Premier League inaugural season, 1992, he scored 20 goals, helping the team to finish 5th, the highest it has reached. In all, he played 8 seasons for QPR, scoring 80 goals.
And then there was Rodney Marsh. Before becoming Manchester City Royalty, Marsh played six seasons for QPR after starting his career in Fulham. He started when the club was in the Third Division. Marsh was the top scorer in nearly all his seasons for QPR, helping the club to two successive promotions, all the way to the First Division, including a League Cup in 1966-67. During 211 matches for QPR, Marsh scored a staggering 106 goals.
Queens Park Rangers’ name comes from an area – the majority of the players during inauguration came from the neighborhood of Queen’s Park, London. Like many others, the establishment of the club is a result of a merger between two clubs – St. Jude and Christchurch Rangers. Since 1963, QPR plays its home matches in 18,439-seat Loftus Road.
Be it in the Premier League, or the Championship, the blue and white stripes of Queens Park Rangers has always maintained a high-speed, attacking, exciting brand of football.
