Singer and songwriter Rihanna, her full name being Robyn Rihanna Fenty, hails from the Caribbean island of Barbados, where she was born in the town of Saint Michael on 20^th February 1988.  Brought up in the island capital Bridgetown, she was only fifteen years old when she started recording demo tapes. The rapper and hip hop producer Jay Z auditioned her for Def Jam Recordings in his capacity as President of the label. Rihanna made two albums in consecutive years Music of the Sun (2005) and A Girl like Me (2006) which reached the top echelon of the US Billboard listings.  Her influences for her deep throated vocals were singers such as Madonna, Bob Marley, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.

Reviews of the first album were mixed with critics praising the reggae number "Pond De Replay” but were less enthusiastic about the remaining tracks. By the time she made the second album she had moved to New York and it created a much more favourably impression. One critic commented “As for now, A Girl Like Me is a fine work by a singer with tremendous potential”.

The big breakthrough happened in 2007 for her third studio album “Good Girl Gone Bad” for which she had taken charge. The internationally popular hit single “Umbrella”.  That was followed up with five platinum selling albums including Unapologetic (2012) which won a Grammy award and her most recent album Anti (2016) which was her second to reach the coveted Billboard No 1 slot.

She has broken the record in terms of age and speed for having no fewer than fourteen number one singles on the Hot 100. Among her awards have been eight Grammys, eight American Music Awards and the very first Icon Award at the American Music Awards.

Rihanna is a highly stylish performer and her public appearances are greeted with great appreciation.  Her face has graced over 70 magazine covers and a French fashion house made her the face of their spring/summer collection. She has also made her movie debut in “Battleship” as well as a voiceover for the animated DreamWorks film “Home”.
