대해서 SM 캉
Stade Malherbe Caen has been around for a long, long time. In its first and not finished shape, the club was established in 1892. But it took the club a long, long time, until 1985, when it was on a brink of reaching French’s upper division, that the club moved on to full professionalism. Until then, it was a 90-year history of total amateur status.
Nearly 20 years after it was founded, in 1913, SM Caen was formed as we know it today, after a merger of several clubs playing in the city of Caen and in the province of Normandy. In the same year, the club has adopted the red and blue uniform colors that serve it until today. It reached French’s 2nd division for the first time in 1934, but in years to come, the club has returned playing in Normandy’s amateur divisions.
It wasn’t until 1985 that the club has turned fully professional. Three years later, under the guided hands of coach Pierre Mankowski, who’s only objective was to get the club promoted to 1st division, SM Caen finally made it to the big league.
In the early 90’s despite heavy financial burden that almost drove the club to the brink of bankruptcy, MS Caen managed to finish in the upper part of the league and qualified for the UEFA Cup. In its only European play until today, the club lost to Spanish side Real Zaragoza. The years since has not been a smooth ride for the club, as it shuffled back and forth between 1st and 2nd divisions.
Some notable players have worn the red and blue uniform over the years. Among them, we can note Russian forward Alexander Mostovoi, who scored 3 goals in a singles season (1993-1994) Defender William Gallas, who started his professional career in Caen in 1995 when the club was in the 2nd division and helped it get promoted AS Monaco star Thomas Lemar, a product of Caen’s youth academy, who also started his professional career in re and blue Midfielder N'Golo Kanté spent two season in Caen (2013-2015) before winning the Premier League with Leicester City and Swedish striker Kennet Andersson, who scored 9 times in the 1994-95 season.
MS Caen play its home matches in Stade Michel d'Ornano, with a capacity of 20,453 seats.
