대해서 선덜랜드
Sunderland AFC springs from one of the most football obsessed areas in the whole of the country where matches against their much loathed (by them anyway!) local rivals Newcastle United are not only hotly contested but the results and the respective positions in hierarchy of football are very much taken to heart. The start of the 2016-17 season saw Sunderland in the Premier League, by virtue of a 17th place finish in 2015-16 as against Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship after an unhappy season. History tells us that the active renewal of the rivalry on the field is unlikely to be long postponed.
Sunderland’s history has been a complete mixture of achievement and struggle. The club was formed in 1879 and since then has finished top of the pile in the old First Division six times (1892, 1893, 1895, 1902, 1913, and 1936) and has also been in “runner-up” place five times. Only five other clubs can better Sunderland’s record. Sunderland have enjoyed two victories in the FA Cup: 1937 saw them bettering Preston North End 3-1 whilst more recently they pulled off a surprise win over favourites Leeds United by a single goal. In addition they were finalists in the Football League Cup in both 1985 and 2014.
Sunderland spent a long time at the top; in fact no fewer than 68 successive seasons until they were relegated for the first time in 1958. They returned to the First Division in 1964-65 where they remained until their relegation in 1970 and in fact moved up and down three divisions until their latest return to the top flight in 2007-8 where they have remained ever since. The team has certainly “diced with death” during several seasons, not least in 2015-16 when only Sam Allardyce’s late appointment as manager kept the side from relegation. With Allardyce’s recent appointment as England manager, worries about the team have crept in again.
For many years Sunderland’s home ground was Roker Park but for most of the past two decades, their home games have been played at the all-seater Stadium of Light with a capacity of 49,000. Although situated in an area which is somewhat in a decline industrially, Sunderland as a Premier League club have become somewhat of a valuable property. So much so that in 2014 their “brand value” was estimated at $93 million, making them 31st in the entire world.
There is no doubt that Sunderland with its immense support and massive traditions is a big club in every sense of the world, although one where recent playing success has not done justice to the legend. It has even been felt that great performances in the derby match against Newcastle compensated for any other disappointment and the record shows Sunderland have in fact been undefeated against their old enemy for three seasons, winning five of the six matches played between them.
