American football team the Tennessee Titans now based in Nashville, Tennessee compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. When they started their playing life in 1960 it was as the Houston Oilers, as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The Oilers won the first two AFL Championships, and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.
The year 1997 saw the team move their location from Houston to Tennessee where they played for just one season at the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis. . The club moved to Nashville in 1998 and played in Vanderbilt Stadium. The Oilers became the first NFL team to call Tennessee home when the franchise relocated to the Volunteer state. Two years later in 1999, the franchise retired the nickname Oilers and became known as the Titans.
Why the Titans? With their new stadium in Nashville finally complete, the team decides to make a name change to align themselves closer with the people of Tennessee. After playing two seasons as the Tennessee Oilers, team owner Bud Adams formed an advisory committee to research names and a “Guess the Name” contest to gain additional feedback was also held. The committee selected Titans citing the desire to have a nickname that reflected “strength, leadership and other heroic qualities.”
Top Titans include Steve McNair has to be the only true franchise quarterback in the team's history. "Air McNair" took the Titans to the playoffs four times and shared an MVP award while also getting selected to three Pro Bowls and picking up a Walter Payton award in 1993 for good measure.
Bruce Matthews is the only player who played for the Tennessee Titans to be in the Hall of Fame. Matthews appeared in a ridiculous 14 Pro Bowls and was an All-Pro selection 10 times. Add to that the nineteen years he played in the league and you see why Matthews was an easy choice for the Hall of Fame, since he may be the best center to ever play the game.
Keith Bulluck is thought of as the best defensive player in the history of the Tennessee Titans. A virtual “tackling machine” and a leader on the field, the three-time All-Pro totalled 770 tackles, 15 forced fumbles, 69 defended passes, 19 interceptions and 18 sacks while he was with Tennessee. Not to mention the fact that from 2002 onward, he didn't miss a single game.
Eddie George was the picture of consistency for the Titans. In his eight years as the Titans' primary runner, he only came short of 1,000 yards once and earned a trip to four Pro Bowls on the way.
